This is a 25-inch heavyweight Perfecto built from 3–3.5 oz US-sourced steerhide that’s chrome-tanned, drum-dyed, and vacuum-dried. Steerhide is top-grain cowhide from castrated male cattle—denser and more uniform than standard cowhide due to controlled growth and reduced fat content. The chrome tanning process cross-links collagen fibers with chromium salts, resulting in high tensile strength, water resistance, and stable dimensional properties under load.
The leather arrives stiff and requires extended break-in. Vacuum drying (rather than toggle stretching) leaves fibers compressed, which increases initial rigidity but improves long-term shape retention. The sealed finish provides surface water resistance and stain protection, though prolonged saturation will still compromise the hide. This is a full-duty riding jacket designed for impact abrasion, wind resistance, and durability over multiple seasons.
The asymmetrical front zipper, offset belt, and snap lapels form a multi-layer wind barrier across the torso. The insulated quilted liner is sewn in permanently and adds thermal mass for cold-weather use. At 3–3.5 oz, this leather offers meaningful slide protection in low- to moderate-speed impacts but is not equivalent to modern CE-rated armor or reinforced race hides.
Construction & Riding Functionality
- Large single-panel back: Eliminates vertical center seam to reduce stress points and improve flexibility across shoulders
- Bi-swing back panels: Dual accordion pleats span shoulder blades; expand 2–3 inches during forward reach without pulling jacket hem upward
- Grommet-vented underarm footballs: Diamond-shaped gussets with metal eyelets allow airflow and increase arm mobility in aggressive riding positions
- 25-inch back length: Standard Perfecto cut; covers lower back when seated but may ride up slightly in full forward tuck
- Tight body fit: Designed to fit close with minimal layering; reduces wind resistance and flapping at highway speeds
- Zippered sleeve cuffs: Adjustable wrist closure to seal wind entry; no additional wind flaps or snap closures
- Fixed insulated liner: 5.5 oz nylon-poly quilted lining sewn into body; not removable for summer use
Hardware & Internal Details
- Nickel-plated brass zipper: Main asymmetric front closure—heavy-duty toothed design; requires periodic lubrication to prevent binding
- Custom embossed “SCHOTT” snaps: Nickel-plated steel snaps on lapels, collar, epaulets, and belt; no star detailing (distinguishes 618 from 613)
- Snap-down collar and lapels: Storm flap configuration; collar stands or folds for wind seal around neck
- Attached belt with square buckle: Nickel-plated square buckle; cinches waist to stabilize jacket and prevent lift at speed
- Three external zippered pockets + coin flap: Side hand pockets, left chest pocket, and small coin pocket (originally a 1950s custom feature, standard by 1955)
- Internal map pocket: Lower inside panel for flat storage—documents, tools, thin items
- Shoulder epaulets: Double-needle stitched; functional for strap retention or rank insignia; no “One Star” emblem
Intended Rider Use
- Riding style: Cruiser, standard, heritage bikes—designed for upright to moderate forward positions; not optimized for sport or full racing tuck
- Climate: Cold to cool weather (30–55°F); fixed insulation limits versatility in warm conditions
- Rider type: Riders prioritizing durability, weather resistance, and traditional motorcycle protection over modern armor systems
- Break-in requirement: Stiff out of the box; requires 20–40 hours of wear to soften and conform to body shape
- Abrasion resistance: Heavyweight steerhide provides better slide protection than mid-weight cowhide but less than modern 1.2–1.4mm competition leathers
- Water performance: Surface-sealed finish repels light rain and road spray; not waterproof under sustained exposure
This jacket is built for long-term use and conforms to the rider’s body over time. The steerhide will darken, crease, and develop wear patterns but does not require conditioning due to the chrome-tanned, sealed finish. The tight fit and non-removable liner make this a dedicated cold-weather jacket with limited three-season versatility.
